Week 2!

The festival is now well underway and we’ve already seen some amazing events, but there’s even more to come! The second week of ‘The Bald Soprano’ begins tonight, and after being reviewed by Time Out and featured on BBC London news, we’re ready to give the audiences the great show they expect and more! But don’t worry, there won’t be any ego trips onstage this week - if anything we’re more determined to do the play justice! 33% Films will also be a heavy feature at the weekend, so make sure you come along and check them out, the young talent is exceptional if I do say so myself

HARDCORE REHEARSALS!!!

The set is up and midway through rehearsals and we are in pain! After too many mince pies over Christmas The Bald Soprano Cast are feeling the physical strain thanks to Jorge and his hardcode warm ups. BUT we are coping and pushing on forward. Ladies are now rehearsing in heels and humm Stef hasn’t dropped a few times no!!! New cast members are throwing themselves in at the deep end and their efforts definitely haven’t gone unnoticed. My admiration goes out to Cerise for throwing up on set and continuing to rehearse after. SHE IS A SOILDER whose undigested prawn curry still lingers in the air!!! (Only joking we mopped it up). I cannot end this blogg without mentioning the multi talented Tuan who amazingly could do The Bald Soprano as a one man show! LETS KEEP GOING GUYS! Thank you until next time!

A lively new production from Tamasha, which invites us into the private lives of young people in Britain’s secondary schools. As we tune into their lyrical daily chat, a revealing subtext of stories and dreams, posing and posturing, allegiances and rivalries emerges. A physical theatre performance exploring the parallel experiences of young soldiers in the First World War and modern day Iraq

Thurs 7 Feb, 8pm – Scenarios by Collective Artists, £2

Developed through interviews and workshops with a group of young parents from Lewisham, Scenarios uses music and drama to tell the stories of those young people who from naivety to the search for love found themselves dealing with scenarios that should have waited until they grew up.

When the going gets tough, the tough gets going!

The last few days have been quite intense. We’ve had some more work-in-progress scripts come through and have also programmed some more events in our main space. One of these includes a night with work from the Theatre Royal Stratford East. They will most definitely bring something special and something worth your £5. The BFI film night has been confirmed (Woo Hoo! : ) ): Friday 1st February 2008. On this night they will be deconstructing films and talking through how they were made which all sounds extremely exciting so all you budding filmmakers better get in there and quick! On that very same night we are having our very first BSL Interpreted performance (British Sign Language) for the youth theatre. Oval House Youth Arts are taking the world by storm. And we are taking all young theatre and filmmakers in South London with us.

Oh my gosh! I’m so bloody excited! 33% London is actually happening. I remember when this was just another ambitious thought a few months ago. I never thought that it would blow up as much as it has now. I feel really empowered working on this and privileged to be such a young member of the company in a respected and responsible position. I’d like to thank everybody who has helped to get this festival onto it’s feet.

Now that you’ve heard all the nice stuff, we come to reality. Time is ticking very quickly. Christmas is upon us and we only have two weeks to promote, programme and practically organise this festival. We are waiting for a lot of replies from companies and because it is so close to the Christmas break it is becoming increasingly worrying. But we all know full and well that this going to be the bomb!

All the hard work will pay off though because at Oval House and especially in the Youth Arts department, we don’t give up and we will never ever go out without a bang.

We are still looking for young people that would like to showcase their works in progress. We are also looking for people who would like to test out the effectiveness of their monologues for drama school or just general auditions. This would take place in one of our studios every night of the festival. Also not to forget, we are looking for young filmmakers who would like to showcase their work.
